Congratulations to Anthony Pearce who took out first place for his Trailor Back. A lot of work went into all the projects. Thanks also to the sponsors Mitre 10 and Wiltshires, who contributed some prizes for all participants.
Julie Beddow, Ann Richardson and I will be going to Warwick this weekend for the Cluster 9 Muster. We will be presenting “The benefits of forming a Satellite Rotary Club – The Stanthorpe Experience. We are looking forward to sharing our perspectives.
The Water Relief & free BBQ at old landmark bldg. is to continue (see roster below).
We are still in a drought and there are still members of our community who are still suffering.
We have had an offer of help from other Rotary members outside of our community enquiring how they can help. If you can think of a need in the community that can benefit from some practical help, please contact Geoff Marsden or Fran Hodgson with your ideas.
It has been a fortnight of politics
Whenever politicians start talking in mystical terms, beware. They might be trying to disguise and excuse real suffering by wrapping it up in big incomprehensible words. Be particularly careful about the following four words: sacrifice, eternity, purity, redemption.
If you happen to live in a country whose leader routinely says things like ‘Their sacrifice will redeem the purity of our eternal nation’ – know that you are in deep trouble. Yuval N Harari, ’21 Lessons for the 21st Century’
CONGRATULATIONS to our Rotary Club member Belinda Lister who retains the title “Honourable Member’s Wife” status. Well done James and Belinda, we know you both work hard for “a better and inclusive” community. Thank you.

In stressing the need for Rotary members to embrace change, RI President Holger Knaack noted that “time won't slow down for Rotary”: “We will not let rapid change defeat us. We will capture this moment to grow Rotary, making it stronger, more adaptable, and even more aligned with our core values”.
"We provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders." - Rotary International's Strategic Plan.
Our Core Values include:
Service, Fellowship, Diversity, Integrity and Leadership.

The Lab Assistant
So I was in the chemist lab and I said to the assistant, “What gets rid of germs?”
She said, "Ammonia cleaner."
I said, "Oh sorry, I thought you worked here...”

In this bulletin, there is a request for Rotary stories to include in a book being produced to celebrate the 100 years of Rotary in Australia.
I know that sometimes we feel like we a little cog in a big wheel, but we each have a unique story of being a Rotarian or have a special experience or have a Rotary hero…
So, to motivate each member to write 500-700 words about that little something that is unique to your personal Rotary journey, I have attached my special thoughts on being a Rotarian.
PS, if you would rather tell your story to a scribe, please call me! I’d love to hear your story and help you write it! Ann
I’ve wanted to be a Rotarian for years. To me, being a Rotarian epitomised what is in my heart… helping others. Founder of Rotary, Paul Harris, said that ‘’Whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves.”
I think of Rotary’s achievements as the POWER OF MANY. Consider the END POLIO NOW project. Through decades of commitment and work by Rotary and our partners since the first project in 1978, more than 2.5 billion children have received the oral polio vaccine, starting with an original commitment of $760 000
What if it was just me trying to help to end Polio? I couldn’t raise $760 000 on my own nor could my Rotary Club! I don’t know Bill and Melinda Gates well enough to ask them to share in our goal to END Polio! But, this year alone, I did fill my Centurion Tower and I did work beside Stanthorpe Rotarians at our Club fundraisers for Polio and I did assist the Stanthorpe Interact Club in painting pinkies purple to raise more Polio dollars. It doesn’t sound too much on its own but, with the Gates Foundation $2 for $1 deal… the effort of my fellow Rotarians and me and the Interact members became about $10 000! All Rotary Clubs and their members around the world combine in similar efforts.
How successful is the Power of Many? Since 1978, we’ve seen a worldwide reduction in polio cases of 99.9% In the last 3 years, we’ve seen wild polio cases in only two countries, Afganistan and Pakistan. We are THAT CLOSE TO ACHIEVING THE ERADICATION GOAL!
So, my story….
In 2016, the timing was right for me to join Rotary. I was winding down towards early retirement and the Rotary Club of Stanthorpe was taking on the challenge of a new style of club – a Satellite Club. The meetings didn’t clash with my scouting responsibilities so I became an inaugural member of the Rotary Satellite Club of Stanthorpe Flexitime.
This year, Rotary International President Holger Knaack is urging Rotarians to embrace change so Rotary can expand and thrive. He said “Every new member changes us a little bit. That person brings a new perspective and new experiences. We will grow stronger as we learn from new members.” The Rotary Club of Stanthorpe was before their time in 2016 in seeking new members with new ideas and approaches.
During my two-year term as Chair of the Rotary Satellite Club of Stanthorpe Flexitime, I asked my fellow Rotarians to support me in making a difference to indigenous children in Australia. Together, we raised funds to END Trachoma by 2020. I could have donated some money to this cause independently but I believed that the POWER OF MANY would have a greater impact. Together, the Satellite Club members donated funds through fellowship activities which I matched. At our Opera in the Vineyard fundraising event, the Rotary Club of Stanthorpe and our generous guests raised over $6000 towards the End Trachoma Project. To sweeten the story, our local Interact members collected 3 shoeboxes of used stamps which a Victorian Rotary Club sells, with funds going towards this project. This combined effort shows the Power of Many!
While it seems that the 2020 goal to eliminate Trachoma won’t be reached, together we have made a difference so far and will keep going till we win against this childhood disease. That’s what Rotarians do.
Being a Rotary member has given me the power to do more good for those who need it than I could have done on my own. The combined power of my fellow Stanthorpe and Stanthorpe Satellite Rotarians and Interactors has allowed me to find many ways to help others, not just locally but nationally and internationally. Being around people with such positive attitudes towards humankind is personally fulfilling. I am proud to be a Rotarian.
So, I am privileged to lead a toast to this organisation that gave me, and all of us, the power to make a bigger difference in our world than we could do on our own.
A toast to Rotary International!
World Interact Week
This week is Interact's Anniversary.
Rotary Clubs have sponsored youth activities since the 1920s, promoting community service and expanding their worldviews. Rotary members, along with students, put Interact into action. on 5 November 1962.The Interact Club of Melbourne High School, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Melbourne, Florida, USA, became the first Interact club
Our Interact Club is doing it tough at the moment. COVID, loss of advisor/mentor and challenge from other activities has reduced numbers. But they are enthusiastic and want to continue. As the host Rotary Club we need to support them. Do you have a service project idea that they could work on? Do you have time on Thursday afternoon to share your Rotary experience with them? Could you take on the support of Interact for the next 6 months?
These young people are future Rotarians. Lets help them to become community-minded adults.

Dear club and district leaders,
The Rotary International Board of Directors challenges us to ensure that underrepresented groups have greater opportunity to participate in Rotary as members and leaders, regardless of a person’s age, ethnicity, race, color, abilities, religion, socioeconomic status, culture, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Building authentic and lasting connections with diverse communities is critical to demonstrate that we mean what we say.
Register now for, The Power of Connection with Diverse Communities on Thursday, 12 November at 15:00 Chicago time (UTC-5), and submit your questions to our experts. A recording of the session will be available to everyone who registers.
During this webinar we will:
· Acknowledge our unconscious bias
· Champion the value and benefits of connecting with diverse communities
· Learn to build authentic relationships, especially when it comes to volunteering
We look forward to hearing your thoughts and questions.
Sincerely,
The Membership Development Team
Rotary International
P.S. Throughout 2020-2021, Rotary will host a webinar series to explore diversity, equity, and inclusion. Read more about the sessions that will be offered.
