NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT.

G’day Everyone,

What a busy month we are having!

The Ballandean function was a great success! Congratulations Peter on achieving 50 years as a Rotarian. Wasn’t Alan Taylor surprised when his name was announced as a Paul Harris Fellow! A great way to recognize community service!

Catering for Foxbar Falls Open day went well. Final figures haven’t been calculated as yet. Some invoices haven’t been received. Karma was a great Ambassador for the day and had organized activities well! She had to take a swim after the rowing race as the Rotary team were pipped at the post by the Granite Belt Grower’s Association team.

This Saturday, September 18, is the unveiling of the Millie Marsden Memorial. It’s at 1:30 – 3:30 pm. It’s all happening at Heritage Park. Hope to see you there!

There is a meeting on Monday night at the International Club. Don’t forget to bring something to eat to share. Discussions will be about organizing the Rotary Leadership Institute Training days here next weekend, September 25/26, at the International Club.

Cheers,
Jim

Our good friends, The Occasional Players, will be joined by violin soloist Alan Smith.  Alan's bio reads like a "who's who" in the list of people under whom he has studied, leading initially to a Bachelor of Music in Performance (Honours).  He has studied and performed extensively in Europe.  Since returning to Australia in the mid 1980's his work has been extensive with symphony orchestras, chamber orchestras, various ensembles whose names would be familiar - Arioso Quartet, for one.  In 1995 he returned to Brisbane to take up the position of Concertmaster of the Qld Symphony Orchestra.  He has performed as a soloist and has played double concerti with violinist Nigel Kennedy.  Since stepping down as concertmaster with QSO in 2011 he has performed widely and recorded for ABC FM.  Alan plays on a violin by Jose Contreras which was made in 1770.

Alan was scheduled to make an appearance for us late in June when we hosted musician friends of James Cuskelly on a chilly June evening, however an impending Covid lockdown forced Alan to turn around at Aratula and head back for Brisbane.

Now the planets and several diaries have aligned, allowing this performance to proceed.  The title "Changing Seasons" comes from one element of the performance, the movements "Winter" and "Spring" from Vivaldi's The Four Seasons.  Very appropriate given the time of year at present.   The programme will also include movements from Bach Partita No 3, and other pieces which are sure to delight.  As much as many of us listen to very good recordings at home, nothing quite compares with hearing and seeing live performance.  And it's even better when the live performance comes to your home environs.

This concert is very much the usual format for Music in the Gallery:

2pm start time in the wonderful acoustic space of the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery amid the ambience of a lovely exhibition. Tickets are on sale now.  Go to srag.org.au, click on WHAT'S ON, click on Music in the Gallery, click on "Changing Seasons" and follow the links to Book Tickets.
